Sonia raises a total of €12 million in funding to reduce administrative workload for doctors
Hamburg, November 28, 2025 – “So that doctors can truly be doctors.” This is the vision of Sonia Solutions GmbH, headquartered in Hamburg, Berlin, and Luxembourg. In 2024, the team around founder Philipp Kuhn-Régnier (39) began developing an AI assistant named Sonia. Built entirely in Europe, the solution uses speech recognition to prepare medical documentation and billing workflows.
“After just one year of development, we save doctors, assistants, and administrative staff an average of one hour of administrative work every day,” says Kuhn-Régnier. “This gives physicians more time for patient care and significantly improves satisfaction in day-to-day practice.”
Sonia launched in the German dental care market, where Kuhn-Régnier previously co-lead the dental chain zahneins. By the end of 2025 – and with more than 500 customers onboard – the company is preparing to roll out to additional medical fields in the coming year.
UVC Partners now led the seed round, convinced by the strong early traction and Sonia’s promising outlook as a European AI healthcare application, joining existing investors Lucid Capital and Blue Lion, and a strong group of several business angels. The total funding now amounts to around €12 million.
“Doctors are successful when they can actually practice medicine,” explains founder Philipp Kuhn-Régnier. “But more than a third of a doctor’s work is pure administration.” He experienced this firsthand while building zahneins in Hamburg and subsequently assembled a team of developers and healthcare specialists to build an AI application: “Technology that works intuitively and inspires trust – that was the foundation for creating real relief for physicians.”
The team started in dentistry. “We know the dental market extremely well. At the same time, it comes with particularly complex and detailed billing rules. We told ourselves: let’s tackle the hardest discipline first.” Sonia is meeting that challenge: in its first year alone, more than 500 customers subscribed to the SaaS service.
“We measured an average daily time savings of one hour per doctor,” says Kuhn-Régnier. “At the same time, documentation quality improved significantly. Fewer billable steps were forgotten – some dental practices reported more than a 10 percent increase in revenue.” Demand grew rapidly, and Sonia is now used in over 1.2 million treatments per year, from single practices to group practices and dental service organizations.
Before Sonia could deliver these results, the team had to tackle Germany’s strict administrative and regulatory demands. An intuitive AI application that prepares medical documentation and billing using speech recognition must meet the highest standards for data privacy and security. Sonia is fully GDPR-compliant, uses only European data centers, and processes information in a strictly pseudonymized manner. Privacy experts today consider Sonia a benchmark for safe, European medical AI.
Sonia creates unified, structured documentation and billing data across providers and practice locations – a central advantage for large practices, medical care centers (MVZs), and multi-site organizations. “Our work with MVZs shows that Sonia generates a homogeneous data structure, forming the foundation for consistent interpretation in administrative processes,” says Kuhn-Régnier.
At the same time, Sonia’s ecosystem continues to expand: in Germany and Austria, the company already works closely with leading practice management and administrative systems that have integrated Sonia into their workflows.
Despite rapid technological growth, Sonia remains committed to its core principle: closeness to everyday medical practice. From the very beginning, Sonia established a customer support team made up of 7 percent physicians and medical professionals – people who understand clinical workflows firsthand.
“We grow responsibly, close to our customers, and with the clear ambition to truly simplify medical work,” says Philipp Kuhn-Régnier. “Our goal is a sustainable premium solution that combines trust, quality, and real-world value. Together we’re building the infrastructure modern medicine deserves.”
After a successful start in 2024 and 2025, the company is ready to accelerate further next year – the list of innovation projects is long. The rollout into additional medical disciplines is prepared, enabling Sonia to support more specialties with tailored assistance. New regulatory requirements also come into effect: since October 2025, all doctors in Germany must store diagnostic reports in the electronic patient record (ePA) – another task Sonia will largely automate.
For Philipp Kuhn-Régnier and his team, the vision remains clear:
“With Sonia, doctors can truly be doctors.”
